The center also deploys persons with disabilities as its workers, thereby providing them with livelihood projects and making them responsible members of society despite their handicaps. Walk and Work Foundation, Inc. was officially started in 2009 with the aim of reaching out to patients and clients who sustained various disabilities due to sickness, congenital deformities, and accidents.
It had a sitting Board lead by Dr. Jessie B. Villareal to manage and its staff. The Foundation is closely supported by Liliane Foundation and NORFIL Foundation Philippines through its various projects.
The project started in Iloilo City in 2009. Approximately there are 8,000 PWD’s in the whole Region VI alone and most of them are classified as orthopedically disabled like a person with amputations in various forms. Victims of Cerebro-Vascular accidents (strokes) and congenital cases or children born with birth defects. Most of these PWD’s are deprived of any help and access to medical care. The planned strategy is to provide access to orthopedic assistive devices like prostheses, orthosis, and wheelchairs in order for PWD’s to be able to walk again and find gainful employment. This will be an integrated approach with cooperation between the different government agencies like PCSO, DSWD, and PHIC.
To provide good quality prostheses and orthoses, including repair and fitting. It will also involve in physical rehabilitation, orthopedic, physiatrist consultation and related services. To provide assistance to Person with disability (PWD) to improve their living conditions and their quality of life. To create social and economic value through wealth creating programs that will have at least a double bottom line (social and financial) that accrue to the PWD and improve their financial capacity and become productive citizen in the social economy.
